Four of Pentacles

We see a man seated, who holds a Pentacle tightly against his chest. His feet each trap a Pentacle below them; another Pentacle sits on his head, atop his crown. These Pentacles aren’t going anywhere, if this man has anything to say about it.

By holding the Pentacle against his chest, the man blocks his heart. He cannot give or receive love. By holding down the Pentacles with his feet, he cannot go anywhere. He is trapped. He is preoccupied with Pentacles, as suggested by the Pentacle on his head. It forms part of his crown.

This is an image of great miserliness, someone whose greed has immobilized him and controls him. The number four stands for stability; the Pentacles element is Earth. When stability is carried out to excess, it becomes stagnation. This person is seriously stagnated. He cannot move.

Such a person often will refuse to open himself to possibilities for fear of losing what he has. Even when he has little, he fears letting go to take something else, some other possibility. He is blocked in by his own fears.
