The Magician shows a man performing magic. On his table are the symbols of the four suits – a Wand, a Cup, a Sword, and a Pentacle. Around him are flowers – red roses and white lilies. Although red roses generally represent romantic love, in this case they may simply represent passion for his craft. White lilies represent purity of intent or rebirth.
The Magician is holding a double-ended wand in one raised hand; his other hand points downward. This pose suggests drawing down Heaven to Earth. However, the Magician’s hands seem reversed. Normally it’s the left hand that receives and the right hand that gives. I interpret this to suggest that we are seeing the Magician as though in a mirror – that he is a reflection of us. In that case, it would be the left hand that was raised, the right hand pointing to Earth.
I wonder whether the Magician is drawing down to Earth the Fool’s spirit to be embodied.
The Magician’s belt is a snake that is biting its own tail. This is the symbol of Ouroboros, representing infinity, eternity, and the cycle of life and death. Above the Magician’s head is another symbol of infinity, the lemniscate (∞).
In some decks, the Magician is known as the Trickster.
