The World

A naked woman seems to be dancing in mid-air. She holds two Wands; a purple cloth wraps around her. She is framed inside a laurel wreath. Surrounding her in the corners of the card are four beings – an eagle, a lion, an ox, and a man. These are the four faces of the cherubim as described in Ezekiel 1:10.

10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.

These faces also appear in the Wheel of Fortune. There they are winged beings with full bodies; here they are only the heads.

Different authors have various interpretations of these four creatures. They might represent the four seasons, or the four elements of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth; or the four fixed signs of the zodiac – Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Taurus.

Although the woman seems to be moving towards our right, she is looking to our left – into the past. While clearly moving forward, she also regards what has already passed.
