The past is gone.
A figure walks away from eight Cups. He appears to be going on a journey.
This shows someone who is seeking more. He already has many Cups. Possibly he feels disappointed in life, despite having several Cups. It may be that he simply isn’t satisfied with what he has, and feels dejected – walking off in discouragement.
It may be that, despite having what he needs, he still feels some lack. There seems to be a gap in the Cups, as though something were missing. The man may be seeking what is missing.
I see this as a person who decides to go on a quest. He is not disappointed in what he has; he just feels that there is more to life. He is not walking away from disappointment, he is actively seeking something more.
Note that he has already crossed the water; he has overcome the first obstacle of his journey.
Note also the odd-looking “Sun.” Rachel Pollack suggests that this shows a solar eclipse; the Moon is moving across the face of the Sun, briefly blocking the Sun’s light. The darkness is temporary; the Sun will return after a while.
