Nine of Cups

A somewhat plush man sits in front of a table that contains nine Cups. The man’s arms are crossed over his chest. He has a self-satisfied expression on his face, and seems rather smug. He seems to have it all.

In fact, this card is traditionally called the “Wish Fulfillment” card. This tradition says you can make a wish and it will come true. Choose wisely, though. The Universe has a way of fulfilling wishes that often leads a person to regret the wish.

Although at first glance it seems that this man has it all, something is missing – other people. He is alone. His crossed arms protect his chest, protect his heart – but they also block his heart so that he cannot give or receive love.

In fact, all the Nines are alone – Nine of Wands is embattled; Nine of Swords is alone with nightmares; Nine of Pentacles has great abundance, but is also alone. In fact, the card numbered Nine in the Major Arcana is the Hermit – alone yet again.

Some have pointed out that while the man is comfortable at the moment, he is sitting on a wooden bench. Over time this may prove to be uncomfortable; so this sense of satisfaction is temporary. And of course, it is; everything is temporary.
