A man is seated on his bench, diligently working on a Pentacle. Several other Pentacles are nearby – some apparently finished and hanging up; one under his bench, perhaps ready to be worked on next. In the distant background there is a town with a castle.
He seems focused on his work. Unlike Seven of Pentacles, who is resting, this figure is busy at his work. He is showing mastery of his skill. He is earning his wages. One might say that the servant is worthy of his hire.
Some authors suggest that this image represents apprenticeship. I am inclined to think it’s more about mastery. I think it might be taken either way – or both, depending on the context.
And it might simply be that, no matter how good you get at something, even when you’re a master, there is always something more to learn, new skills to master.
