A man carrying five Swords is tip-toeing away from what appears to be a military camp. He is looking behind him. Two more Swords remain; possibly this is what he’s looking at. He may be looking back to ensure he is not seen. It is clear that the man is stealing these Swords.
The general idea is sneakiness, theft, dishonesty, trickery, betrayal. It might also include risky behavior, taking unnecessary or excessive chances.
This might be a warning to the Querent to be alert to the possibility of someone cheating them; or it might be addressed to the Querent, possibly pointing out to him that he’s the one being shady.
This is one of a few cards where the figure is moving in one direction while looking in another. The same idea appears in the Page of Swords and the World.
Interestingly, some authors call this card the Lord of Unstable Effort. It suggests the possibility that dishonesty or being false doesn’t have lasting benefits.
